Soweto

CULTURE

The township that changed the world

South Western Townships β€” Soweto β€” is home to 1.3 million people and carries more history per square kilometre than almost anywhere on Earth. Mandela's house on Vilakazi Street (now a museum) sits a few hundred metres from Desmond Tutu's former home β€” the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners. The 1976 Soweto Uprising, sparked by student resistance to Afrikaans-language education, became a turning point in the fall of apartheid. Today Soweto is a vibrant, proudly local neighbourhood with great food, music, and energy.
