The North West province balances the resort polish of Sun City and the accessible safari appeal of Pilanesberg with landscapes and histories that run much deeper. The province includes the Taung Skull heritage region, parts of the ancient Magaliesberg fringe and a long tradition of weekend escape travel from Gauteng. It can feel split between leisure, geology, archaeology and bush travel — which is exactly what makes it more interesting than its stereotypes suggest.
